A few days ago Google officially announced the completion of a new web indexing system called Caffeine. They claim that Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than the last indexing system, and that it’s the largest collection of web content they’ve ever offered. This is big news for those in the video SEO industry. Why?

The answer begins with how Google works. Put simply, when someone searches for something on Google, the site isn’t searching the live internet, it’s searching an index. Google continually crawls the internet for information for the index Caffeine is a new method of crawling. Google is more than aware that content isn’t just text anymore, and that new material is richer, more complex, and being posted at amazingly fast rates. Universal searches should ideally yield the most up to date and relevant results, which is increasingly difficult for search engines to provide.

Caffeine has accomplished this by analyzing the web in small portions and updating the Universal Search index on a continuous basis, globally. The old Google refreshed information in layers, and every time a layer was refreshed they had to crawl the entire internet, slowing down the rate at which a page was made available for viewers. Caffeine gets rid of the layers and swirls around the internet in a “vortex,” perpetually updating the index.

Caffeine will provide foundation that makes it possible to run a faster and more comprehensive search engine with timely and up to date results. Google claims that Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel every second, and that if it were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second. Google will now be able to find more content the moment it’s published,  so that Universal Search result are the most relevant and timely. But what does this mean for video and VSEO?

It will take some time to see how things actually play out, but in theory video content will be found and indexed faster than previously possible. Caffeine will focus on crawling for all the different emerging content varieties, blog posts, tweets, Facebook updates, and your VSEO content.  This will probably also lead to more videos in the Universal Search results, making VSEO more important than ever before. Caffeine is a totally new system by which to index online content and make it available to the user, and it is important for any business to use that to their best advantage.
